Weekend Recap: Father's Day 2012

{I meant to get this up yesterday, but the day got away from me.}
{Also, this entry falls under the heading of "things I am writing so our family won't forget - not necessarily something everyone will consider to be a riveting read"}

Adeline was born just days after Mother's Day last year. So while my first official Mother's Day was this year, today is Adam's second Father's Day. Over the past few days we have tried to remember how we celebrated Father's Day last year, but Adeline was only 4 and a half weeks old at the time and we must have still been in the newborn haze because neither of us can remember. So I was hoping to make this year a little more memorable.

Last Monday, Adeline and I met up with a friend and her baby at All Fired Up - one of those pottery places where you pick a piece, paint it, and then they fire it for you. It was a hard decision, but we finally came up with a pen/pencil holder for Adam's desk. I have never done anything like this before, and let's just say I was more than slightly overwhelmed. I had NO clue what to put on it or how I should paint it. Really, I am not a crafty person at all! In the end, it was sort of a moot point because trying to paint pottery with two kids ages 12 months and 2 months was a bit of a tag team effort. Adeline allowed me to get her handprints on it (not without some dramatic tears) and even "helped" paint the inside a bit. Other than that, she sat in her stroller with a snack in one hand and a paint brush that she was chewing on in her other hand. Then when we were getting ready to leave, I let her out of her stroller and she decided it was time to take her first steps! I was so excited and even got it on video by about the 3rd time she did it, but I was also sad that Adam wasn't there to see it too. As for the pottery, it turned out pretty well and now proudly sits on Adam's desk at work.

Fast forward a few days, and by mid-week last week, I was feeling a little down and out. Adeline has definitely been "testing" us with her behavior quite a bit and it was truly one of the first weeks since I began staying home with her that I felt overwhelmed. On Friday night Adam told me that I should sleep in on Saturday and he would get up with Adeline. She must have sensed that Father's Day was around the corner because she slept until 8:15 Saturday morning - essentially letting us both sleep in.

Later on that day, the three of us went out for an early Father's Day lunch. It was good, but we have learned that it is no longer easy to eat out with Adeline at restaurants that don't deliver your food extremely fast. This pretty much limits us to eating at Chick-Fil-A for the foreseeable future. After Adeline's nap, Adam took her for a run in the jogging stroller and I stayed behind to do a marathon cleaning session upstairs. It is amazing what I can get done with 35 minutes alone in our house.

On Sunday morning I figured I should return the favor and was going to get up with Adeline while Adam slept (even though he technically got to sleep in Saturday morning too). So of course the little stinker decided 6:30 was an acceptable time to wake up. Oh well. So we got up, put sweatshirts on, and headed out in our pajamas to the Starbucks drive-thru. We grabbed Daddy (and Mommy) some caffeine and then came home and made blueberry pancakes. And then we woke Adam up to partake in all of the goodness.

After church we decided to go out for lunch again (twice in one weekend!).

After Adeline's nap we headed down to Pony Pasture - a park system along the James River in Richmond. It was a GORGEOUS day and neither of us had actually ever been to Pony Pasture. Shame on us after 7 years in Richmond!

All in all, it was a great weekend. Adam is out of town for all or part of the next two weekends, so I'm glad we were able to clock in some family time. And Adam paid me a very nice compliment - he said that I did a great job setting the bar high for Mother's Day next year. That truly meant a lot to me because he can be hard to buy gifts for, but he seemed to like the gifts we picked out and even more than that, liked the little things we did to make the day special. I can tell you that he deserved to be recognized. He has been such a blessing as a father and a husband over the past year. We are blessed to have him.

And now...a quick picture dump from our weekend.

 {This section of the James River contains large, flat rocks. You can see people in the distance hanging out on the rocks or wading in the river. Just a short ways down the river from here, are class 4 rapids.}
